My Love Affair with Herbal Teas: Nettle, Oatstraw, and Hibiscus

Being half English, I am always partial to a lovely cup of tea. There’s something so comforting about holding a warm mug, taking a deep breath, and letting the aroma slowly wrap around you. Almost ten years ago, when I was living in California, I found myself a little low on energy. Seeking ways to reconnect with both my health and nature, I enrolled in a permaculture certificate course with the Urban Institute of Permaculture, San Francisco. It was during this time that I discovered herbalist Susan Weed https://www.instagram.com/susun_weed/?hl=en, and my love affair with nettle and oatstraw began.

Nettle quickly became a staple for me. I was fascinated by its nutrient-rich profile, packed with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that help support overall wellbeing. Beyond its nourishing properties, nettle has also been studied for its anti-inflammatory effects, making it a gentle, natural way to support joints and ease everyday aches (EBSCO Research Starters, n.d.).

Oatstraw soon followed. I loved its earthy, soothing flavour and the gentle way it seemed to calm both body and mind. Traditionally used for supporting the nervous system, oatstraw is believed to help with stress and cognitive support, making it perfect for busy days or moments when I needed a little mental clarity (Plant’s Hospital, n.d.; Botanical Institute, n.d.). I even found that the kids enjoyed a mild cup in the afternoon, which made it feel like a little family ritual.

When we moved back to Australia, my garden became a playground for herbs and flowers. One of my favourite discoveries was growing rosella, also known as wild hibiscus. The vibrant red flowers were a feast for the eyes and soon became a firm favourite in my herbal teas. Hibiscus not only delights with its beautiful colour but is also packed with antioxidants and has been studied for its potential to support heart health, including gentle blood pressure reduction (Healthline, 2023). My children love it too—it’s a wonderful way to introduce them to the joys of natural, herbal remedies.

For me, making a cup of tea has become more than a daily ritual—it’s a moment of pause, nourishment, and connection. Nettle, oatstraw, and hibiscus each bring their own unique benefits, and together, they remind me of the simple, beautiful ways nature can support our health and happiness. Whether you’re looking for a gentle boost, some nervous system support, or just a moment to savour, these herbs make tea time truly special.
